2008 Sees Largest Single-Year Growth in the Number
of Schools Participating in AP®

Trevor Packer, vice president for Advanced Placement®

Trevor Packer, vice president of Advanced Placement, shares results of the 2008 AP Readings at the AP Annual Conference.

In May, about 1.6 million students around the world took more than 2.7 million AP® Exams. These students came from over 17,000 schools — a 4.7 percent increase in the number of schools participating in the AP Program last year and the largest single-year growth in the number of AP-participating schools ever.

“AP teachers deserve enormous credit for providing a larger and increasingly diverse group of students with the type of quality classroom experience that leads students to be successful in
AP,” said Susan Landers, director of program development for Advanced Placement. “Research consistently shows that AP students who receive a 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.”

The 2008 exams were scored in June by nearly 11,000 college professors and experienced AP teachers at six different sites around the United States. Exam scores increased in 21 AP subjects, and of these 21 subjects, six achieved the highest scores of the past decade:

AP subjects with the greatest score increases in 2008:

  1. Computer Science AB
  2. Comparative Government and Politics
  3. Microeconomics
  4. Physics B
  5. Physics C: Mechanics
  6. Studio Art: 2D Design

Other subjects with exam score improvements in 2008:

  1. Calculus AB
  2. Calculus BC
  3. Chemistry
  4. Chinese
  5. Computer Science A
  6. Environmental Science
  7. Human Geography
  8. Japanese
  9. Latin Literature
  10. Music Theory
  11. Psychology
  12. Spanish Language
  13. Spanish Literature
  14. Statistics
  15. Studio Art: Drawing

“One of the greatest strengths and unique qualities of the AP Program is its community of faculty from colleges, universities and high schools who are involved in various aspects of the course and exam development and scoring process,” Landers said. “A premier example of this community takes place at the AP Readings, where college faculty and AP teachers read, discuss and evaluate student work. Many AP Readers say that it is one of the most valuable professional development opportunities they have ever experienced.”

The AP Program is now accepting applications for educators to serve as AP Readers in June 2009. Readers are particularly needed for Chinese Language and Culture, Japanese Language and Culture, and World History, as well as Environmental Science, European History, Comparative Government and Politics, U.S. Government and Politics, Human Geography, Music Theory, Spanish and U.S. History.
