Gov. Romer To Lead College Board’s
National Standards Initiative

In March, the College Board appointed former Colorado Gov. Roy Romer as a senior advisor to the president of the College Board. Romer, who was also superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District for six years, just completed his tenure as chair of Strong American Schools, a nonprofit entity based in Washington, D.C., that advocates for higher academic standards, improved assessments and other education reforms.

Romer has dedicated his career to public service and ensuring that all students are given access to high standards, high-quality teachers and powerful curricula.

In announcing the appointment, College Board President Gaston Caperton said, “Roy is one of the most highly respected champions of educational excellence and equity in the country. We are thrilled to have him on our team as we pursue our ambitious goal of putting every student on the path to
college success.”

In his new role at the College Board, Romer will work closely with the U.S. Department of Education, the nation’s governors, chief state school officers and district superintendents to promote world-class standards in all schools. He will advocate on behalf of policies and programs that will create new standards, curricula, assessments and teacher professional development programs that are anchored in rigorous academic content and prepare all students for success in college and the 21st-century workforce.

“I look forward to continuing my work in education reform with the College Board,” said Romer. “The work they are doing to package standards, curricula, assessments and professional development is the best work I’ve seen and is making a real difference in improving America’s education system.”
