MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Survey Shows Face-to-Face Interaction Is Highly Valued at Regional Forums

Participants at this year’s regional forums resoundingly agreed that face-to-face interaction with colleagues and College Board staff are two of the most valuable aspects of attending the
annual forums.

In surveys distributed at College Board President Gaston Caperton’s plenary sessions at each forum, attendees rated these networking and social opportunities high in importance across
the regions. Also receiving high marks was the quality of
the presentations.

“It is affirming to see how much our members value the forums and in-person meetings,” said Mary Carroll Scott, vice president of membership. “The question for us is, how do we accomplish that effective communication and professional development in difficult economic times, when it’s all the more important to
share ideas."

In light of the current economic climate, Caperton requested a survey to collect feedback from attendees at all of the regional forums. Overall, attendance at the regional forums was down from 2008, with many people saying the economy was hindering opportunities to travel and attend professional development programs. More than 1,100 surveys were distributed to attendees, and about half of them were returned.

The statement that received the lowest rating on the feedback form, with an average response of “disagree,” was “I’d rather take online professional development workshops offered by the College Board.”

In related research done through an e-mail survey, respondents, not all of whom attended a regional forum, said that the content of the meetings and the interactions with peers are what motivates attendance. For those who didn’t attend, a lack of funding or the current economic environment was most often
the reason.

The e-mail survey also showed great interest in the regional forums from people who have not yet attended one.

Ideally, most members would meet in person to network and share best practices and new ideas each year. But in times of tighter budgets and travel restrictions for many members, the College Board continues to explore ways to keep members connected, including online or DVD presentations, in addition to cost-saving measures for the regularly scheduled conferences.
