Programs and Services Revisions to SpringBoardŽ Reflect Input SpringBoard® users across the country are excited about the results of a two-year effort to develop the program into a comprehensive curriculum that meets state standards and addresses academic rigor to prepare students for Advanced Placement® courses and for college. “SpringBoard works and now we’ve made it even better,” said Pam Nelson, vice president and general manager of SpringBoard. “We’ve been pleased to make these revisions based on input and feedback from districts across the country. The program is written by teachers, for teachers, and it’s been field-tested all along the way.” The new SpringBoard includes a consumable student book, an annotated teacher’s edition, an online component and professional development. Major revisions have been made to the English Language Arts and Mathematics materials in response to teachers’ suggestions and concerns. The curriculum and formative assessment are aligned with College Board Standards. Teachers and administrators in several districts have had a sneak peek at the new program and expressed their appreciation for the AP® Connections, advanced vocabulary, new grammar lessons and well-balanced variety of literature, as well as the comprehensiveness of the new math curriculum. “SpringBoard has given us the capacity to hold high standards for all students and provided a flexible framework by which we have made the curriculum our own,” wrote Julie Manley, a teacher in the Bellevue (Wash.) School District. Tameka Woodard, a high school teacher in Charlotte, N.C., said, “English teachers have many strands to teach — reading, writing, vocabulary ... the list goes on. In SpringBoard, all of the ELA strands are placed together in creative, high-interest units. These units are completely accessible to students. Through the integration of rigorous activities and embedded strategies, there is a clear pathway to success for students on the performance-based assessments.” The new books are expected to be available in June, in time for training during the summer for teachers in the nearly 900 schools that use SpringBoard. In the fall, more than 800,000 students will be learning in SpringBoard, which is the College Board’s official Pre-AP® Program. Look for more information in the coming months about SpringBoard training and online components.
