PROFILE Adapted to Help International Students

For more than 50 years, the College Board’s College Scholarship Service® has provided need-based financial aid information to help administrators at more than 600 institutions and organizations manage the financial aid process. Now the online CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE® application has been adapted for use by international students and, since its Oct. 1 launch, 70 institutions elected to require or accept the PROFILE for their international financial aid applicants — more than five times as many as anticipated in the first year.

PROFILE allows institutions to collect asset and financial information from international students so that they can award their institutional aid to the students who need it the most. The program was adapted for international students after a group of institutions formed the Global Consensus Approach and developed a coefficient that is applied to the College Board’s Institutional Methodology (IM), allowing it to reflect the global economy. After PROFILE produced consistent results, the College Board integrated the coefficient into IM, which is the basis for calculating need in PROFILE. The international version of IM is supported by the College Board’s Institutional Need Analysis System (INAS®).

Students benefit from the online PROFILE application because it allows them to report information in their own currency. It also provides question texts adapted to an international economy along with extensive help text and instructions. Students can submit the PROFILE data electronically to multiple colleges at one time, thereby eliminating the need to copy and mail or fax paper application forms and ensuring prompt delivery of the information to each participating institution. The information provided enables aid administrators to gain a comprehensive and reliable picture of each family’s financial strength and communicate with applicants early about their potential eligibility for aid.

To complete the PROFILE, international students register online and indicate the colleges to which they will apply. Students can do this on a personal computer, or by visiting one of several EducationUSA Advising Centers, which are located around the world. Based on registration information and college choices, each student receives a personalized online PROFILE application. Once submitted, the application is processed by the College Board, and an electronic data file containing the student application data is sent to each college indicated by the student.

To learn more about PROFILE and how to register for the service, call 800-927-4302 or visit CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE on the Web.
