Program Planning Committee Selects from
Hundreds of Session Proposals for Forum 2009

On May 8-9, about 30 educators from member institutions gathered in New York City for the Forum 2009 Program Planning Committee meeting. Led by co-chairs Barbara Gill, assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions and enrollment planning at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Marcia Lyles, deputy chancellor for teaching and learning at the New York City Department of Education, the committee pored over 280 session proposals, discussed the plenary events and offered their broader thinking about what they hoped to see accomplished at the Forum.

The theme of Forum 2009 is “Education and the American Future.” In addressing the committee, Lyles said that she was somewhat new to the College Board, but she had recently participated in the College Board’s AP® Equity conference. She explained that she has been appointed to head up an effort between New York City Schools and the City University of New York to increase college readiness among New York City students. She was looking forward to the discussions about preparation as well as access and equity that would take place at the meeting and at the Forum. “When I was invited to serve as co-chair of this committee, I was eager to talk about our efforts but, more importantly, to hear your ideas,” she said. “The things I’ll learn will be very beneficial, and I know I will get back more than I give.”

The volunteer group of teaching, counseling, admissions, and financial aid professions reviewed and discussed session proposals first in cross-professional groups. They then broke out into groups arranged by professions to make second-round assessments of proposals within their specific areas of expertise. It was fitting for Mother’s Day weekend that the group included a mother-and-daughter duo. Patricia White, upper school director for the Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, is an active member of the College Board. She encouraged her daughter, Suzanne White, college counselor at Notre Dame High School in Lawrence, Mass., to participate.

Forum 2009 will be held in New York City Oct. 21-23. For more information, visit www.collegeboard.com/forum.
