A Note from Gaston Caperton

Dear Colleagues,

The lead story for this edition of Connection is the annual release of our Trends in College Pricing and Trends in Student Aid reports. College affordability is top of mind for educators and families right now, and these reports from the College Board are designed to provide you with the most current and pertinent information on the topic.

We are sending you the reports, along with video commentary from Sandy Baum, coauthor and senior policy analyst from the College Board, on the same day that the information is released to the media. The reports emphasize that it’s very important for parents and students to understand the difference between net and published prices. About a third of full-time college students receive grants to help them pay for college. One of this year’s findings is that although published prices continue to increase, the average net prices have not increased significantly over the past five years.

Earlier this month, our Board of Trustees met here in New York, and I had the opportunity to present to them the areas that we at the College Board will be focused on over the next five years — our five-year vision. We have an exceptional opportunity to make a difference in the future of our country because education is now at the top of our national priorities. Political, social and economic factors have converged to create a sense of urgency around education reform, and the College Board is poised to be an even more significant contributor.

Over the next five years, our work will be prioritized around the following: to build on our K–12 programs and become a leader in college readiness systems; introduce a new college connection and success system to assist colleges and universities in admission and financial aid; serve the education community through advocacy and policy research; grow our international reach; and engage with innovative technology to transform our offerings for students and institutions.

To achieve these ambitious goals, we will need to further engage you, our members, and to rely on you for guidance and partnerships. We are looking forward to working with you.

This week, we’re holding our most important membership event of the year, the national Forum. As always, I am very much looking forward to gathering with you and with other educators from across the education spectrum and hearing from an exceptional group of guest speakers. If you are not joining us in person, I hope you will follow the news of the day in our Forum Daily Connection, which will be e-mailed to you starting Thursday.
