International Teachers Take Advantage of Professional Development Opportunities

AP workshop participants at Hong Kong International School.

In September, teachers and AP® Coordinators from 15 international and American-style schools throughout Asia participated in AP science; Calculus; and Government and Politics workshops at Hong Kong
International School.

Workshops were also held in October at regional school conferences, including at the Association of International Schools in Africa in Lusaka, Zambia, and Dakar, Senegal, as well as the Tri-Association Conference in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. These workshops are organized by the College Board and sponsored by the Office of Overseas Schools of the U.S. Department of State, which provides support to schools that serve U.S. dependents living overseas.

Upcoming AP and Pre-AP® workshops will be held at the Association of American Schools in South America in Santiago, Chile, and at the International School of Latvia in collaboration with the Central and Eastern European Schools Association. Additional workshops are being planned in New Delhi, India, during the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools in January 2010 and in Manila, Philippines, as part of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools.

A number of AP Conferences were held in Canada this fall. Sessions in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Toronto, Ontario; and Winnipeg, Manitoba; covered a spectrum of AP subjects. Additional AP Conferences are scheduled for November in Edmonton, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia, where AP in Canada started more than two decades ago.

For more information about workshops outside of the United States, educators can visit http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/intlpd.

Last year, more than 1,025 schools in 114 countries outside of the U.S. participated in the AP Program.

U.S. Department of State Holds Fall U.S.-Based Training Program for EducationUSA

EducationUSA advisers confer with “Gen. George Washington” at his home at Mt. Vernon, Va. From left are Seemi Khosa, Pakistan; Lucena Felipe, Philippines; Bernice Affotey, Ghana; Priyani Shah, Nepal; Martha Huaman, Peru; and Salim Al-Badi, Oman.

The U.S. Department of State has brought 22 advisers to the U.S. for this year’s Fall U.S.-Based Training Program (USBT) for EducationUSA. The attendees began the three-week course, which is administered by the College Board, in Washington, D.C., followed by travel to New York and on to conferences in Dallas, Knoxville, Albuquerque and Milwaukee to learn about the latest trends in international recruitment and admissions at U.S. universities and colleges. During their last week, they will visit campus clusters in Miami, Atlanta, parts of Illinois and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. EducationUSA advisers provide comprehensive and objective information about U.S. educational opportunities to more than 25 million students overseas each year. They are a resource to accredited U.S. institutions in their recruitment planning and evaluation of foreign academic systems. The State Department is developing a new website with a powerful database to filter searches by country for advising centers, recruiting trends, educational systems, useful links and much more. To receive free access to the Country Fact Sheet page, please contact Diane Weisz Young, EducationUSA program officer, at youngdw@state.gov. U.S. institutions interested in hosting EducationUSA advisers for 2010 campus visits may e-mail EducationUSA@collegeboard.org for more information.
