September 2009

Gaston’s note to the members for September Connection

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to begin my note to you this month by extending congratulations to the chair of our Board of Trustees, Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, for her recent participation on a panel with the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, among other notable panel members.

As you may know, Youlonda is the associate vice president for enrollment management and director of scholarships and student aid at Syracuse University. The occasion was a meeting of the White House Middle Class Task Force at Syracuse. Youlonda’s expertise in higher education and her commitment to College Board advocacy projects, such as the CollegeKeys Compact™, made her a wonderful resource for Vice President Biden and Secretary Duncan. We at the College Board were delighted that she was asked to contribute to such an important gathering. A video clip that includes her participation is available in this issue of Connection.

Next month marks the College Board’s National Forum 2009 here in New York City, and I am looking forward to sharing ideas with you there. The time is right for meaningful change in education, and our agenda and activities during Forum are keeping this imperative front and center.

At the forefront of Forum will be our advocacy initiatives. Several high-profile Task Force reports will premiere at the Forum. Each report, I hope, will stir your ideas, emotions and conversations. We will also hear from a number of distinguished and thought-provoking speakers. Among our presenters are Gordon Gee, the president of The University of Ohio, America’s largest and one of its most highly regarded state universities. Gee will share his insights on new initiatives that are under way in Ohio. Other presenters include New York City School Chancellor Joel Klein and City University of New York Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, who will share their insights on advocacy. Respected author, television journalist, and Washington Week managing editor Gwen Ifill will offer insights on Washington and the future we must help structure.

This year’s Forum promises to be one of our most eventful, and I look forward to all the meaningful presentations and interactions.

I hope to see you soon in New York.

Gaston
