Hundreds of Houston students and their families learned more about the value of a college education at a Nov. 16 rally highlighting the College Board’s Five Ways Ed Pays campaign.

"The more education you get, the healthier you are going to be, the longer you are going to live, and the higher your salary will be," said Houston Schools Superintendent Terry Grier.

The campaign’s research report, Five Ways Ed Pays, shows that a college education correlates to greater wealth and better health for adults, as well as stronger community and family ties.

At a college fair held in conjunction with the rally, students and their families met representatives from various local and state colleges, and the first 1,000 students in the door received a free copy of the personal planning toolkit, Get It Together for College.

In addition, students learned about a video contest where they can share the benefits of getting a college education and win prizes. First-place winners in two age groups (Grades 6–8 and Grades 9–12) will receive new Apple® iPads and have their videos featured on the HISD and College Board websites. Second-place winners will receive new Apple iPods.
