40,000 Students to Benefit from Updated CollegeEd Program in Prince George’s County, Maryland
Sept. 2010
In this new school year, thousands of students will benefit from a new approach to college planning and career exploration through an updated CollegeEd® program.
David Eagle of Prince George's County (Md.) Schools said his district is implementing CollegeEd in all of its high schools for the first time this year, reaching about 40,000 students.
“Our goal, in strengthening our college-going culture, is to get kids thinking about college and to prepare them for success in college, not just access,” Eagle said. “We wanted this effort to be more developmental, not just one class for our high school seniors, which is something we had tried in the past. We’ll be using this in all of our high schools this year, and for all of our students, through the advisories.”
The program supports grades 7–12 using three levels, each with its own student workbook and accompanying educator guide. The program also includes online resources for students and educators, as well as Help Your Child Make College a Reality: A Family Guide to College Planning. The family guide is available in English or Spanish and is designed to encourage and support parents’ involvement in the college planning process.
Eagle said that the family component and the career exploration features were important factors in Prince George’s County schools choosing CollegeEd. “We felt it was important to have a strong parental and family component,” he said, “and I think students are going to like the RoadTrip Nation videos. I believe that MTV-style approach will encourage their interest in thinking about their futures.”
The ties between career options and high school course work help students understand the academics, as well as the logistics, of moving toward their goals, said Eagle. “The resources are incredible, if we can get our students to use them and engage in these ideas.”
