The Southern Region closed its 2013 Regional Forum with an ovation for Calvin Mackie, former Tulane engineering professor and crackerjack speaker.  Calvin urged our assembled throng to put deeper academic exploration at the center of our state standards implementation, but to link that infusion to heart and hope for students.

How did our forum theme — “Collaborate! A Blueprint for Common Core Success” — reverberate with our higher education colleagues?

We asked that question of several members of our Southern Regional family; here are a few of their answers:

Ashley Bianchi, Rhodes College director of financial aid, writes, “This forum gave the financial aid community a unique insight into the changing landscape of education across our country. We should begin to ponder the impact that this changed environment will have on our ability to aid students through federal, state and institutional programs.”

Common Core, Career and Technical Ideas Percolate at Regional Forum

Educators and advocates buzzed about the Southern Regional Forum this month, talking about the possibilities and the challenges of implementing the Common Core State Standards in their respective areas.

Collaboration and the Common Core were the themes of the two-day event, which drew hundreds of teachers, administrators, counselors and higher education professionals to Atlanta.

At a variety of sessions, counselors, teachers, administrators and higher education professionals learned more about successful strategies, common myths and upcoming opportunities related to these curriculum changes, which have been adopted by most of the states in the College Board’s Southern Region.

Educators, Advocates Honored at Southern Regional Forum

During a special luncheon at the Southern Regional Forum in Atlanta, several professionals were recognized with regional awards for their work on behalf of students.

The 2013 CollegeKeys™ Compact Innovation Awards were given to Atlanta-based Reach for Excellence in the “Getting Ready” category and to Miami-based Educate Tomorrow in the “Getting In” category. These organizations were honored for their innovative and effective work to increase the percentage of low-income students who get ready for, get into and get through college. These groups also received $5,000 to help continue or expand their work.

Jordan Daniels of Grimsley High School in Greensboro, N.C., received a 2013 Bob Costas Grant for the Teaching of Writing. He is among six regional winners of $3,000 grants to enhance efforts to help students develop their writing skills.

Don’t Get Distracted by Common Core Myths, Speaker Tells Educators

Leaders at all levels in the nation’s schools must focus on fidelity in bringing the Common Core State Standards to classrooms, Earlean Smiley, superintendent of McCormick County (S.C.) Schools, told educators at the Southern Regional Forum in early March.

Smiley opened the forum with inspiring words about collaboration and the importance of good communication as schools in states across the South work to implement the Common Core State Standards.

Collaboration and the Common Core were themes for the two-day event, which drew hundreds of teachers, administrators, counselors and higher education professionals to Atlanta.

At the opening luncheon, participants enjoyed entertainment from local students of the DeKalb School of the Arts.

During her remarks, Smiley urged the audience to make concentrated efforts toward the hard work of collaboration.

Jordan Daniels Named Southern Regional Recipient of Bob Costas Grant for the Teaching of Writing

Jordan Daniels, an English teacher at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, N.C., is one of six recipients of the 2013 Bob Costas Grants for the Teaching of Writing. The grant recognizes exceptional teachers for using innovative methods to inspire their students to write. The award was created to support teachers and to thank Bob Costas, the Emmy Award–winning broadcaster and author, for his generous public service work on behalf of the National Commission on Writing. Each winner receives a grant of $3,000 to support her or his innovative work. Daniels has developed significant peer-editing programs with his classes and plans to offer a writing resource center that would serve the school, alumni and community, with trained students leading editing sessions.
