Texas Juniors to Take the SAT® for Free This Spring
Mar. 2010
Thanks to the generous support of the Texas Education Agency (TEA), high school juniors in Texas public and charter schools will have the opportunity to take the SAT® this spring at no cost to the students or their families. Texas juniors who register for the SAT can take the test for free during its administration hours on Saturday, May 1, or Saturday, June 5.
To register for the SAT as part of this program, students need to obtain an SAT voucher, available from their high school counseling offices or through SAT registration reminder e-mails. They can then use their individual voucher numbers to register at sat.collegeboard.com. The registration deadline for the May exam is Wednesday, March 31, and the registration deadline for June is Wednesday, May 5. Late registration is available for both dates, although the TEA will not cover additional fees that may apply for late registration.
Students who registered for the May or June SAT before this program was announced will receive a full refund of their registration fee from SAT Customer Service and do not need to register again using a SAT voucher. Those who registered for the May or June exams as part of the College Board’s fee-waiver program will continue to receive all benefits of that program and do not need to reregister.
If your high school has not yet received SAT vouchers or you need additional copies, please contact Angel J. Davila at 212-713-8123 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
The SAT is the most widely used college admission exam in the state of Texas and is accepted by all four-year colleges in the state. Among the class of 2009, a record 141,733 Texas high school students took the SAT, a 3.4 percent increase from the class of 2008. Texas SAT takers are also among the most diverse in the nation. Of the state’s 2009 college-bound seniors who took the SAT, 52.4 percent were minority students, up from 41.0 percent in 2004. More than 30 percent of Texas SAT takers in the class of 2009 were Hispanic, and the number of Hispanic SAT takers in Texas has grown by nearly 105 percent since 1999 (from 20,854 in 1999 to 42,695 in 2009).
