Goucher College President Gives Colloquium Keynote

Addressing the theme of the Colloquium, “Return on Investment: Global Perspective, National Interest,” Goucher College President Sandy Ungar said, “the American system of higher education is impressive in countless ways, where a child of immigrants like me can have the same opportunity as a descendant of the Mayflower.” But he cautioned audience members to think beyond a national obsession to be number one when talking about our higher education system in a global context.

Citing that the United States has more students in college and more diversity on campus than ever before, he asked: “But how is that return on investment? Are we serving our true national interest, or are we afflicted with dangerous complacency about the quality and importance of higher education? Are we paying enough attention to global issues?”

Undergraduates at Goucher College are required to participate in at least one international study program. Ungar said that a “fascination with the larger world” is a long-held educational principle at Goucher, which was founded in 1885 and was one of the handful of colleges that formed the College Board in 1900.

Ungar argued that it would be a cruel hoax to claim that our students are well prepared to work in an incredibly competitive global environment, if we remain steeped in U.S. exceptionalism. Ungar called for a paradigm shift in our education system. Referring to the drilling of U.S. state capitals in schools, he asked why it should be more important for a student to know Tallahassee than Machu Picchu? “I believe that international education will help the young people learn how to solve the problems we face in our own country,” he concluded.
