AP® Student Art Exhibition on National Tour

Some of the finest artwork created by students in AP® Studio Art courses last year will be on display in Atlanta through Jan. 28.

The artwork from 30 AP Studio Art students was selected from more than 140,000 pieces submitted in portfolios. Artists from 17 states are represented in the drawings, mixed media, paintings, photography and sculpture in the exhibit.

This year, more than 29,000 AP Studio Art portfolios were evaluated during the 2007 AP Studio Art Reading. Art instructors from high school, colleges and universities reviewed and selected the art to represent the best work submitted.

The exhibit at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Gallery 1600 is free and open to the public.

“The exhibition acknowledges students’ hard work and their achievement in completing this rigorous course,” said College Board President Gaston Caperton. “The work of these talented students showcases an extraordinary sense of commitment and independent thinking, a breadth of work that reflects college-level standards.”

AP Studio Art is unique among AP programs because of this public display of work that honors top artists and shows the high level of achievement of students who submit portfolios.

The yearly exhibition is usually displayed in a gallery at the AP Annual Conference. Having the exhibit open to the public at three sites across the country, coinciding with regional forums, gives more exposure to the artists and the Program, said June Shikatani, coordinator of curriculum and content development for the AP Program.

In February, the exhibit moves to the Renaissance Hotel in Chicago, coinciding with the Midwestern Regional Forum. A couple of weeks later, the exhibit can be viewed at the Newport Beach Marriott in California during the Western Regional Forum.
