Mathematical Association of America and
College Board Partnership

The College Board-Mathematical Association of America Committee on Mutual Concerns met Jan. 5 in San Diego. For 30 years, this committee has met each year, on the eve of the American Mathematical Society’s annual meeting, to consider topics of mutual interest to the MAA, the College Board, and invited special guests. Although the committee cannot resolve issues, it can offer suggestions that can be considered by appropriate committees, panels and staff of the two organizations.

The committee has co-chairs from both organizations:  Carl Cowen from the MAA and Bernie Madison from the College Board. Madison, who is professor of mathematics at University of Arkansas, is also chair of the College Board’s Math Sciences Academic Advisory Committee. Also attending from the College Board were Trevor Packer, vice president for the Advanced Placement Program® and test development specialists Robin O’Callaghan and Andrew Schwartz.

Among the College Board items discussed, Madison reported on EXCELerator™ and College Board Schools, Packer presented research demonstrating how well AP® math students do in college, O’Callaghan discussed the SAT® calculator/equity study, and Schwartz presented a review of the AP course and exam research. Other items of interest included high school and college calculus articulation, presented by MAA President-elect David Bressoud, and a CLEP® report.

“The great thing about this meeting is seeing the people that you work with throughout the year and being able to interact in person with one another,” said O’Callaghan. Whether informally debating the use of highly sophisticated calculators or just sharing a post-meeting meal together, this group enjoys this annual gathering.”
