2008 Western Regional Forum
The Western Regional Forum, held late last month at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa in Newport Beach, Calif., was more than just a meeting of the minds, it was a trip to paradise. The idyllic setting of the forum — with its palm trees, breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and 70-degree weather — inspired a great dialogue about the changing educational landscape in the West, and particularly in California.
Keynote speaker Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education at Stanford University, kicked off the plenary session, urging attendees to unite with their K-12 and higher education counterparts and join forces with those who work within politics, the legal system and health care to close the opportunity gap. “We need to join hands, because this is probably our last opportunity as a society to take the steps that are needed to reclaim our democracy,” she said. “I think we can make that difference together.” For more, visit the western regional page.
