The College Board Leadership Institute for Principals™
The College Board Leadership Institute for Principals™ met in Fort Worth, Texas, Feb. 26-March 1. Held at the American Airlines Training and Conference Center, this meeting was the second session for this year’s institute. CBLIP is a national leadership development program for practicing principals — launched in late 2006 by the College Board with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — which was designed to help participants develop and sustain rigorous and nurturing school environments by building their capacity as school leaders and by providing them with the knowledge and tools to meet and master today’s leadership challenges.
The program, limited to a cohort of committed principals from across the country, organizes participants into small, sustained learning groups to enable the development of an extended professional network of colleagues. Each learning group of six principals is facilitated by a coach that provides in- and between-session coaching on a monthly basis. Participants are expected to apply their newly acquired knowledge, skills, tools and protocols in their school setting and then share the outcomes with their coach and colleagues. This comprehensive program, which is supported by an advisory board of current leaders in education, bolsters principals in expanding their leadership horizons. The inaugural group, Cohort I, had 44 principals from 21 states representing a range of elementary, middle and secondary school educators from urban, suburban and rural communities.
This is the second year for the institute, which runs from November through July, convening first at the national Forum and concluding at the AP Annual Conference. The Fort Worth meeting was the second of three required residential sessions for this year’s group (Cohort II), which comprises 54 elementary, middle and high school principals from 16 states across America. Over the course of four 12-hour days, the principals engaged in activities, case studies and simulations centered on professional learning communities, individual and organizational change and advanced communication skills. Over the next three months, the participants, with the ongoing support of their coaches, will apply and share the tools, protocols and strategies that they learned and practiced in Texas.
Based upon the success of Cohorts I and II, the College Board is committed to the continuation of this program and is accepting applications for Cohort III, which will begin with the first of three sessions scheduled for November 2008 in Houston, Texas.
