| K-12 and Higher Ed Partnerships Recognized |
The College Board’s Midwestern Regional Office recognized three educational institutions for their collaborative efforts to prepare students for college success. In keeping with the College Board’s mission, the Partnership Award honors outstanding collaboration across K-12 schools or systems, two-year colleges and four-year colleges and universities.
The first recipients of the award are the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Council Bluffs Community School District and Iowa Western Community College. Representatives of each were honored at the annual Midwestern Regional Forum in Chicago in February.
“The College Board recognized the outstanding partnership of UNO, Iowa Western Community College and the Council Bluffs school district to connect more students to college success and opportunity later in life,” said Kris Zavoli, senior director of state government relations and regional membership for the College Board.
UNO, IWCC and the Council Bluffs Community School District have worked together to invite elementary students to tour college campuses, provide AP® training for high school teachers and provide library and technology access and support for students.
“This partnership offers students access, academic rigor and ongoing opportunities for success,” said Rosalie Saltzman, a member of the College Board Midwestern Regional Council and director of the UNO Honors Program.
The College Board is seeking proposals for the award for 2009. Recipients will share their stories of opportunity, challenge and success in forming and implementing such a partnership at a session at the Midwestern Regional Forum Feb. 8-10, 2009, in Chicago.

The Midwestern Region had a successful regional forum in Chicago last month, and I would like to thank all those who attended the event. I owe a special thanks to the program planning committee for putting together a great program. We are already accepting proposals for the 2009 Regional Forum, and we encourage session proposals that are illustrative of trends, new initiatives and/or effective strategies in any academic, financial aid or student service area. The deadline for submitting these proposals is April 17, 2008. Please visit our Web site to download a form: www.collegeboard.com/mroforum.
The momentum of the regional forum continues to carry
us forward, as the largest public AP® workshop in the
Midwest was held March 25-26 at Triton College. Almost
1,400 AP teachers from across the region attended and
explored the many ways to ensure that all students have
the opportunity to be successful in AP. Although we see
an ever-increasing number of students from every background participating in the AP Program, there is still
a lot of important work to be done.
I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all College Board members from the Midwestern Region to sign on to the CollegeKeys Compact™ if you haven’t already. This is a very simple process, and the tenets of the Compact are really no different than those of the College Board — committing to the principle that all underserved students have a right to an affordable, accessible and successful college experience. You can view or print a copy of the CollegeKeys Compact™ commitment form by clicking here.
Our region is also the site for Prepárate™: Educating Latinos for the Future of America, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place May 22-23 in Chicago, Ill. More information regarding registration can be found at www.collegeboard.com/preparate.
