2,800 Take Part in Largest Forum Ever in New York

Opportunities for professional enrichment and inspirational discussion lured more than 2,800 educators and policymakers from 46 states and a dozen countries to the Hilton New York for Forum 2007 in October. The Forum drew its largest crowd yet, comprising a wide range of peers — from superintendents, teachers and counselors, to presidents, faculty and admissions and financial aid officers — who came together for professional enrichment and to set the new agenda for education.

Forum participants discussed how to make their shared mission of improving the education of all students a national priority. Themes of equity, access, advocacy and preparation drove the conversations, as experts in education, politics and the media addressed the Forum's plenary assemblies:

  • Erskine Bowles — President of the University of North Carolina system
  • Bob Costas — World-renowned sportscaster and best-selling author
  • Neil deGrasse Tyson — Director of the Hayden Planetarium and host of "NOVA scienceNOW" on PBS
  • Susan Hockfield — President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Joel Klein — Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education

"I've gone to many symposiums and conferences, but none compared to the College Board Forum 2007," said Marguerite Izzo, New York State Teacher of the Year in 2007.

In addition, Forum 2007 offered attendees 137 compelling sessions, workshops and special events in four days, each designed to foster a culture of educational excellence. "Each session was rich in conceptual, theoretical and practical information for all in attendance," remarked attendee Stan Maliszewski, clinical associate professor at the University of Arizona.

"The Forum provides a tremendous opportunity to discuss best practices and share ideas on teaching and curriculum," said Jennifer Pinkard, AP® English teacher at Fort Myers High School in Florida.
